Polar Music Prize 2019
Paris, 13 February 2019
The International Music Council is both honoured and pleased to collaborate this year again with the Polar Music Prize organisation. The values promoted by the Polar Music Prize strongly echo with our own values that are embodied in the IMC Five Music Rights, which advocate for access to music education and musical participation as well as freedom of expression through music for every child and adult while defending the right of musical artists to be recognised as artists, to obtain fair remuneration for their work and to be given access to professional training, media and work facilities.
This year’s laureates of the Polar Music Prize embody our shared values in an exemplary way.
We are particularly happy to see the work of the Play for Music Foundation recognised today. This non-profit organisation provides music and arts education to unprivileged children around the world. It operates music programmes in Bangladesh, Brazil, Ghana, Mali, Nepal, Rwanda, South Africa, Morocco, Mexico, Argentina and Thailand.
Thanks to the Play for Music Foundation, music schools came into live in impoverished regions. It is important to note that these schools use local resources and local talent in their daily work. Every week, over 1,000 students enjoy the music lessons offered by the schools.
For many children benefitting from the programme, this has been a life-changing experience. Music has transformed their lives. What a wonderful demonstration of the power of music!
With this recognition, the Polar Music Prize acknowledges the tremendous work of the many other initiatives and projects that aim to transform the lives of underprivileged children by offering access to music and the arts.
The International Music Council is proud to accompany the Polar Music Prize organisation in this endeavour.
Culture@Work Africa! 2nd call launched
Culture at Work Africa has launched its Second Call for Proposals on 15 January 2019 to support innovative on-the-ground projects aiming at developing safe and neutral spaces for intercultural dialogue and to promote active citizenship and intercommunity relations.
Le 15 janvier 2019 Culture at Work Afrique a lancé son Deuxième Appel à Propositions pour soutenir des projets novateurs visant à développer des espaces sûrs et neutres pour le dialogue interculturel et à promouvoir la citoyenneté active et les relations intercommunautaires.
66th International Rostrum of Composers: Dates Announced
We are pleased to inform you that the 66th International Rostrum of Composers (IRC) will be held May 14 – 18, 2019 in San Carlos de Bariloche, Province of Rio Negro, Argentina, hosted by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports of the Rio Negro Province and its Orquesta Filarmónica.
For the first time in its history, the IRC will travel outside the European continent with the ambition of being more international than ever before. At the same time, as 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of the International Music Council, it would be a perfect occasion to celebrate the Five Music Rights for which the IMC stands for.
Rostrum+: Listen, Vote, Win 2018
Rostrum+ is a cooperation project co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union which aims to rethink the ways in which contemporary music connects with audiences through radio network by exploring new strategies to develop audiences, promote new music, enhance the skills of radio professionals and inspire cooperation between musicians, higher music education institutions and broadcasting companies throughout Europe and beyond.
From 1 to 14 October, most of the works presented at the 65th International Rostrum of Composers will be available for free streaming. An unique opportunity to discover the most recent contemporary creations from all over the world!

Gender and culture in development and international cooperation
On the occasion of the International African Women’s Day (31 July) and following the declarations by the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean which promotes gender equality and the improvement of social and working conditions of women in Latin America as essential conditions for sustainable regional development, IMC and its partners publish the Call for Action to “Strengthen the synergies between gender and culture in development and international cooperation”. The document is the result of the debates held in the framework of the European Development Days 2018.
In October 2018, the partners will officially launch the activities linked to the Call for Action, taking into account, among others, the resolutions of the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (New York, July 2018).

Arn Chorn-Pond nominated IMC Five Music Rights Champion

Musician, human rights activist, and survivor of the Khmer Rouge period, Arn Chorn-Pond has been nominated IMC Five Music Rights Champion rejoining in this role Dame Evelyn Glennie, Ramy Essam and Tabu Osusa nominated in 2016.
The Five Music Rights represent the core values of the International Music Council. They have been guiding the work of the IMC and of its network comprising some 1000 music organisations in 150 countries of the world.
Arn Chorn-Pond was born into a family of artists, but in 1975 was sent to a children’s labor camp. Under the instruction of a Master Artist, he survived by playing propaganda music. He escaped, spending time at a refugee camp in Thailand, before aid worker Peter Pond adopted him in 1980. He was educated in the US, and started up several community projects in his new country. In the 1990s, Arn returned to Cambodia to find his former teacher and to rebuild the artistic legacy of his family. After seeing the desperate conditions faced by Cambodia’s remaining Masters, Arn was moved to help. In 1998, along with a group of dedicated people from the US, he created the Cambodian Masters Performers Program, which grew into Cambodian Living Arts (CLA).
Press Release: Culture at Work Africa
Culture at Work Africa, co-funded by the European Union, has launched its First Call for Proposals on 25 June 2018 to support innovative on-the-ground projects aiming at developing safe and neutral spaces for intercultural dialogue and to promote active citizenship and intercommunity relations.
25 June 2018 – This First Call for Proposals is open to organizations legally registered in one of the following African countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Applications may be submitted in one of these two lots:
· Lot 1: Projects aimed at enhancing public or private cultural spaces as “safe places” for intercultural dialogue by stakeholders active in the public sphere (e.g. organisations active in the social, educational or environmental fields, youth and cultural centres, schools, universities, libraries, local authorities, etc.).
· Lot 2: Projects aimed at strengthening institutional and professional capacities in intercultural mediation of cultural organisations and operators for social cohesion.
The indicative amount available for the 2 lots is 1,000,000.00 EURO. Any grant awarded under this call will fall between a minimum of 20,000.00 EURO and a maximum of 60,000.00 EURO. During the implementation of the selected projects, Culture at Work Africa will carry out a wide range of activities to support the grant beneficiaries, develop their professional skills and networking capacities.

PREMIER APPEL À PROPOSITIONS POUR PROMOUVOIR LE DIALOGUE INTERCULTUREL POUR LA COHESION SOCIALE EN AFRIQUE URBAINE
Culture at Work Africa, cofinancé par l’Union Européenne, a lancé son premier Appel à Propositions le 25 Juin 2018, pour soutenir des projets novateurs visant à développer des espaces sûrs et neutres pour le dialogue interculturel et à promouvoir la citoyenneté active et les relations intercommunautaires.
25 Juin 2018 – Le Premier Appel à Propositions est ouvert aux organisations qui sont juridiquement enregistrée dans un des pays Africains suivants : Bénin, Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Côte d'Ivoire, République démocratique du Congo, Kenya, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sénégal, Tanzanie, Togo, Ouganda et Zimbabwe.
Les applications doivent être soumises dans l’un des deux lots suivants:
• Lot 1 : projets qui visent à renforcer les espaces culturels publiques et privés en tant qu’endroits « sûrs » pour le dialogue interculturel, mis en place par des parties prenantes actives dans l’espace public (ex. organisations actives dans les domaines social, éducatif or environnemental, centres de jeunes, centres culturels, écoles, universités, librairies, autorités locales, etc.).
• Lot 2 : projets qui visent à renforcer les capacités institutionnelles et professionnelles en médiation interculturelle des organisations culturelles et des opérateurs pour la cohésion sociale.
Le montant indicatif disponible pour les 2 lots est 1,000,000.00 Euros. Pour toute subvention demandée dans le cadre de cet appel à propositions, le montant doit être compris entre un minimum de 20,000.00 Euros et un maximum de 60,000.00 Euros.
Pendant la mise en œuvre des projets sélectionnés, Culture at Work Africa organisera une vaste gamme d'activités pour supporter les bénéficiaires de subventions et pour développer leurs compétences professionnelles et de réseau.
