Advocacy Alliances

The Five Music Rights reflect values that are shared by other culture networks and organisations from other sectors, notably when it comes to cultural rights.  Therefore, IMC engages in diverse collaborations:

#Culture2030Goal Campaign

During the process of creation and adoption of the UN 2030 Agenda and the SDGs, several cultural global networks campaigned, under the banner ‘The Future We Want Includes Culture’, for the inclusion of one specific Goal devoted to Culture, and the integration of cultural aspects across the SDGs. In the context of this #Culture2015goal campaign, 4 documents were produced:

  • Manifesto – Proposal for a Goal (September 2013),
  • Declaration on the inclusion of culture in the 2030 Agenda (May 2014),
  • Proposal of indicators for measuring the cultural aspects of the SDGs (February 2015),
  • Communiqué on the final 2030 Agenda (September 2015) which highlighted “progress made” but also noticed that “important steps remain ahead”.

After 2015, the campaign was renamed to #Culture2030goal campaign. Its renewed vision document (2021) states the campaign’s objectives : a stronger place for culture throughout the implementation of the current UN 2030 Agenda, the adoption of an explicit Goal for Culture in the Post-2030 Development Agenda, and the adoption of an ambitious and comprehensive Global Agenda for Culture.

Highlights of the campaign’s work since 2019 (most recent are mentioned first, all documents can be found here)

  • Several statements on the need to include culture in the UN Pact for the Future (2023 and 2024)
  • Side events at annual United Nations High-Level Political Fora (HLPF)
  • #Culture2030Goal webinar (2024)
  • Statement welcoming growing government recognition of the role of culture in development (2023)
  • Analytical (and critical) reports on the cultural dimension of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, analysing the National Voluntary Reviews (2019) and Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs)” (2021, 2022 and 2023)
  • Statement on Mondiacult 2022 Declaration (2022)
  • Zero Draft of a Culture Goal (2022)
  • Statement on “Culture and the COVID-19 pandemic”

Climate Heritage Network

The Climate Heritage Network seeks to scale up culture-based climate action and to make climate policy people-centred through coordination and cooperation among its members.

IMC brings to the Climate Heritage Network insights from the music sector, shares information and tools from initiatives and projects such as the SHIFT Culture project. It aims to contribute to the realisation to the holistic and inclusive approach to the notion of heritage as expressed in the Network’s communication: “Our members are committed to mobilising arts, culture and heritage to address climate change and support communities in achieving the ambitions of the Paris Agreement. Members work with all types of culture including arts and creative industries; museums and libraries; landscapes, heritage sites and archaeology; and intangible heritage, traditional knowledge and Indigenous ways of knowing.”

The network has grown significantly over the past couple of years, it has gone through a process of structuration which led to the election of a Steering Committee that is based on equitable geographical representation.

IMC co-drafts and signs Open letters, Manifestos and other statements. In October 2023, it became a Founding Signatory of the Global Call to Put Cultural Heritage, Arts and Creative Sectors at the Heart of Climate Action.

Collective collaboration of NGOs official partners of UNESCO

IMC is strongly involved in this cooperation mechanism. IMC Director of Programmes and Partnerships Davide Grosso served as Chair of the International Conference of NGOs and the NGO-UNESCO Liaison Committee from December 2020 to December 2022.

Since December 2022, IMC is member of the NGO-UNESCO Liaison Committee and in this capacity, co-organised together with Arterial Network, the 16th International Forum of NGOs in Abidjan, April 2024, under the title “Sustainable Cultures”.  These activities strengthen IMC’s visibility and role among like-minded NGOs and other organisations as well as vis-à-vis intergovernmental organisations.
