International Federation for Choral Music
The International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM) is a non-profit organization established in 1982 with the objective of facilitating communication and exchange between choral musicians worldwide. Since that time, the IFCM has fulfilled its purpose through the implementation of a diverse range of projects and programs.
The IFCM's mission is to provide access to choral music for all and to support its preservation and development worldwide. The IFCM encourages cooperation between national and international organizations and individuals interested in all aspects of choral music. It also encourages the formation of choral organizations in countries and regions where none exist. Furthermore, IFCM develops and promotes international exchange programs for choirs, conductors, composers, and students of choral music. IFCM nurtures and encourages composers and other creative artists in the development of new artistic work and facilitates the creation, promotion, coordination, and nurturing of choral festivals, seminars, competitions, and meetings organized by its members.
IFCM Important Projects
World Symposium on Choral Music
The first IFCM World Symposium on Choral Music (WSCM) was held in Vienna, Austria, in 1987. Since that time there have been 10 more symposia: 1990 - Stockholm (Sweden)/Helsinki (Finland)/Tallinn (Estonia), 1993 - Vancouver (Canada), 1996 - Sydney (Australia), 1999 - Rotterdam (The Netherlands), 2002 - Minneapolis (USA), 2005 - Kyoto (Japan), 2008 - Copenhagen (Denmark), 2011 - Puerto Madryn (Argentina), 2014 - Seoul (South Korea), 2017 - Barcelona (Spain), 2020 - Auckland (New Zealand) cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, 2023 – Istanbul (Türkiye).
Each symposium offers a diverse array of musical selections from across the globe. Attendees have the opportunity to appreciate the depth of artistic expression within a unique international context. Engaging with different choirs through their respective musical performances, participating in thought-provoking workshops and seminars, networking with colleagues and friends from diverse geographical and cultural backgrounds, and establishing new connections are all aspects of this transformative experience.
Conductor Without Borders
Conductors Without Borders (CWB) is a project of IFCM that helps choral communities around the world connect by providing access to quality choral music instruction. It is a mutual assistance program for conductors in Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.
CWB’s main objectives are: to develop competence in a training program of high artistic quality; to establish a network of cultural exchanges between choral conductors, respecting their cultural and traditional backgrounds; to share a common philosophy of choral singing, repertoire, and experiences; to build a community of local partners, fostering collaboration and information exchange.
World Choral Day
The World Choral Day initiative was proposed by Alberto Grau, Vice-President of the Latin American region of the International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM), and approved by the General Assembly of IFCM in Helsinki in August 1990.
Over the past twenty years, thousands of choirs have participated in the annual World Choral Day (WCD) celebration, which takes place on or around the second Sunday of December. World Choral Day has engaged millions of singers across the globe in concerts, festivals, sing-alongs, choral seminars, Days of Friendship, and other events.
World Choral EXPO
The IFCM World Choral EXPO (WCE) is an event designed to address the needs of the international choral community. The event provides an opportunity for choral singers, choral professionals, conductors, composers, and music educators to interact and learn from world-renowned choirs and their conductors.
One of the WCE's components is the Colourful Voices program, which brings together children's and youth choirs for a day of collaborative activities and performances. The program encourages the singing of both individual and ensemble pieces for and with each other.
YOUNG (Youth International Cultural Management Program)
The IFCM's YOUNG program helps young choral leaders learn, grow, and contribute to the choral community. The program is for young choral conductors, composers, singers, and administrators aged 18 to 35 who want to learn more about choral music and leadership. YOUNG provides access to workshops and on-the-job training. The program was a success at the World Choral EXPO 2022 and the World Symposium on Choral Music 2023. It has a positive impact on the global choral music community. The YOUNG program has a lasting effect. A new generation of young talent is emerging, bringing fresh ideas to the choral music scene. These young managers are inspiring creativity, promoting inclusivity, and expanding the boundaries of choral music.
